Going Places: bike loan program gets off to a good start – News

Activities on campus may look a little different this semester, but students interested in exploring the nearby outdoors can still enjoy the Mohawk Valley, with new opportunities for borrowed bikes and guided walks.
“When word came that there would be no off-campus travel … everything changed for the Outdoor leadership programSaid program director Andrew Jillings. Many students will miss out on the Hill to participate in athletic competitions, Hamilton Outing Club– hiking, or even trips nearby to pick apples, ”Jillings said. “[But] we are lucky; we have incredible opportunities here. Two of the most obvious are hiking and biking. “
The Glen House currently has 10 road bikes, seven mountain bikes, and five fat tire bikes which are typically used for XA (Exploration Adventure) orienteering trips, but are now available every day of the week. Members of the Hamilton community can borrow them by visiting the bike loan form on the Outing Club page.
Jillings and the student leaders also lead guided group walks. Hans Wydler ’21, a bicycle travel manager who helped organize the program, said it provided opportunities for people of all skill levels. Registration for guided group walks can also be accessed through the Outing Club web page. The hikes are listed with the level of difficulty, as well as the expected number of miles, to help participants choose the route that is right for them. There is great interest in the guided tours, with waiting lists filling up.
Beginner riders have a lot to gain from the program. Wydler said leaders “strive to provide resources for people to learn the basics and then fend for themselves.” Signing up for a guided ride is one way to learn the basics on more specialized bikes. Plus, Jillings and Student Leaders offer beginner trail skills and easy hiking options. The skills park behind Minor Field offers opportunities to practice mountain biking before hitting the trails. For those with some cycling experience, the team also offers cycle routes and tips for adapting to different types of bikes.
For students who enjoy exploring campus and being outdoors, keep an eye out for the Glen Hikes being hosted by HOC leaders in the coming week.
