CSD Board of Directors Approves $ 8.9M Fire Hall Contract | News
On December 15, officials from the Community Services District (CSD) of Cosumnes unanimously approved an $ 8.9 million construction contract for Fire Hall 77.
Plans call for opening the 3,300 square foot facility on 3.35 acres of land at 8350 Poppy Ridge Road in the fall of 2023. Fire and emergency medical teams at this station will primarily serve communities. growing areas such as Laguna Ridge in southeast Elk Grove. They will also help cover the neighboring area of Sky River Casino which is slated to open at the end of 2022.
“The fire station will also benefit other areas of the Cosumnes Community Service District by increasing the services provided in those areas,” Cosumnes Fire Chief Felipe Rodriguez told The Citizen. “All residents of our jurisdiction will benefit from the addition of station 77.”
He added that the firefighters and medical services at Station 77 will help his fire department meet its goal of arriving to the emergency room within six minutes of a 911 call.
In November 2020, then-fire chief Mike McLaughlin informed the CSD board of directors of the need for a new fire station and said crews from Station 71 on Elk Grove Boulevard are often affected by traffic when traveling to the Poppy Ridge Road area where Station 77 will be built.
This future station has been planned for more than 15 years, but the project was delayed during the recession of the late 2000s.
A committee made up of a fire brigade chief and several fire captains then helped design the concept plan for the station. The station includes three appliance bays, six dormitories, a communications tower and solar power panels that are part of the CSD’s climate action plan, said Scott Jones, director of engineering, development and the design of the CSD on December 15.
Plans are to have Station 77 operated by 15 employees who were recruited from the fire academy last year. This facility will also operate on an annual budget of $ 3 million, according to the district staff report of November 4, 2020.
On December 15, CSD’s board of directors awarded the $ 8.9 million construction contract to the lowest bidder, DL Falk Construction of Hayward. This contract is more than $ 843,000 higher than the initial construction budget estimate. As part of the agreement, CSD will also pay a contingency of $ 894,900 for unforeseen project expenses.
The overall cost of the project is budgeted at $ 12.3 million, which includes $ 1.7 million for the purchase of fire apparatus and $ 600,000 for design costs.
Under a deal approved by CSD officials last year, apprentices from the Sacramento-Sierra Building and Construction Trades Council labor organization will be involved in the construction of the fire station.
Station 77 will be named after Elk Grove’s first fire chief, JD “Dell” Cann.
